2022 World Cup qualifier : Four takeaways from Super Eagles 2-1 victory over Cape Verde
Nigeria's Super Eagles claimed all three points in their second Group C game in the 2022 World Cup qualifier against the Blue Sharks of Cape Verde.Allnigeriasoccer.com's Izuchukwu Okosi presents the four takeaways from the 2-1 win on Tuesday.
The Eagles Right Back Was A Weak Point
The Cape Verdeans attacked the Super Eagles right side of defence. Shehu Abdullahi wandered off his position which left gaping holes to exploit.
The Eagles played a high line that put them under due pressure.
The Cape Verde Pressing Game
The hosts were dominant in the first ten minutes of the second half of the game.
The Nigerian side were pressed when in possession of the ball and had limited time to outfox their hosts.
The Super Eagles could have had a penalty handed to them in the first half when a high boot of a Cape Verde defender in the 18 yard box meant that Boavista’s Chidozie Awaziem required the attention of the medics.
No penalty call against Cape Verde was the verdict of the referee.
Even the goal scored by Tavares was arguably an offside position.
Super Eagles Missed Wilfred Ndidi
Innocent Bonke did his chances to be part of the team in future no good with a poor display in defensive midfield.
Bonke was rash in the tackles which put him and other teammates under pressure. His ball retention was abysmal and his shooting efforts were disappointing.
The presence and class of Wilfred Ndidi was evidently missing and its time Gernot Rohr found a solution to this whenever the Leicester City man is not playing.
