Arsenal midfielder slammed by pundit Charlie Nicholas for red card against Man City
Granit Xhaka has been slammed by a former Arsenal player for his red card in last week’s 5-0 thrashing by Manchester City.
Ilkay Gundogan gave Pep Guardiola’s men the lead early on and was soon joined by Ferran Torres on the scoresheet.
Xhaka made Arsenal’s task ten times harder when he was sent off in the 35th minute.
Ronaldo to the rescue of the cursed No.7 shirt
The Switzerland international, wanted by Jose Mourinho at Roma in the summer, lunged in to bring down Joao Cancelo.
He didn’t seem to have much control and was dangerous in his approach, forcing the referee to show a red.
As expected, City went on to pick off the Gunners at home. Gabriel Jesus scored just before the break, while Rodri got in on the act in the second half.
Torres then secured his brace as the reigning Premier League champions made it five.
When asked about Xhaka’s performance, former Arsenal player Charlie Nicholas said: “He did what he’s always done. He played the joker card. He is the joker of our club.
“How he can manipulate Roma into paying £17m? I would’ve personally dropped him off there. And then he signs a new contract.
“When you look at the so-called captain in Xhaka, that’s a cop-out. It was an absolute camouflage [the red card] and it just sums everything up about that football club.
“As much as I want to support Mikel Arteta, I’m finding is harder and harder to justify his choices.”
Arteta is under pressure due to his side’s winless start. They are yet to score in the Premier League after three matches.
Xhaka, meanwhile, has been criticised by Swiss media after rejecting a Covid vaccine and then testing positive.
Editor of Austrian outlet Blick, Andreas Boni, said: “It is negligent not to be vaccinated as a professional footballer.
“You travel a lot, on planes, on buses, and you are constantly on the move with different groups of people. And if you get caught, an entire team is threatened with quarantine, which endangers the game.”
Xhaka will miss Switzerland’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Italy and Northern Ireland.
