Chukwuemeka’s Chelsea contract length : Good or bad career choice?:: All Nigeria Soccer

The transfer window is gradually coming to an end with the new Premier League season set to kick off on Friday 5th of August 2022.

As expected, clubs are scrambling to get their deals over the line with Chelsea being one such club.

The Blues made a sensational and well-covered transfer on Tuesday by signing highly-rated Anglo-Nigerian wonderkid Carney Chukwuemeka in a deal worth up to 20 million pounds.

The details of the transfer revealed that Chukwuemeka’s contract at the Stamford Bridge Stadium is six years which means he is contracted to the club till 2028.

This sort of contract length is not very too rampant in football as players mostly opt for four years or four plus one years contracts.

Is this a good career choice from Chukwuemeka? takes a look at the situation.

Chukwuemeka’s main reason for rejecting Aston Villa’s contract renewal proposal was due to his concerns over game-time.

It is widely known that adequate game-time is required for the steady development of a youngster aiming to play at the highest level.

During the height of the Roman Abramovich era at Chelsea, only on rare occasions do you see a youngster from Cobham graduate and get integrated into Chelsea’s senior team successfully.

The likes of Reece James, Mason Mount, and Trevor Chalobah came during the latter stages. So, Chukwuemeka’s decision to join Chelsea and his contract length being right or wrong depend on which model Todd Boehly decides to pursue.

If the American wishes to follow the footsteps of Abramovich, Chukwuemeka’s choice would have been wrong as he would have a load of established midfielders to compete with and most likely end up on loans.

This is where his contract length would count against him as he would have little leverage to leave in search of regular first-team football.

However, if Boehly decides to change the previous policy and go more with youth, then Chukwuemeka would have made the best decision for his career.
