Cody Gakpo agrees to join Liverpool

Dutch professional football player, Cody Mathès Gakpo who lit up the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, has agreed to join Liverpool.

His new contract was announced by his current club, PSV Eindhoven.

Although Gakpo has been linked with Erik ten Hag’s United for some time, news broke on Monday that Liverpool was close to signing the 23-year-old for an initial fee of £37 million (€42 million).

It will be a record transfer for PSV, breaking the previous record of €45 million for Hirving Lozano’s move to Napoli. He is expected to join the Reds in the January transfer window.

A statement released earlier reads “PSV and Liverpool have reached an agreement on the proposed transfer of Cody Gakpo. The 23-year-old attacker will leave for England imminently, where he will be subjected to the necessary formalities ahead of the completion of the transfer.”

After becoming an important member of Ruud van Nistelrooy’s team, Gakpo was linked with several of Europe’s top teams, including Real Madrid and, most notably, Manchester United.

The 23-year-old has nine goals and 12 assists in 14 Eredivisie games this season, which is the third-most in the league after 14 games since 1999-2000, trailing only Van Nistelrooy’s 27 (1999/2000) and former Liverpool player Luis Suarez’s 25. (2009-2010).
