Hungary Stun Germany As Italy Pip England In UEFA Nations

An Adam Szalai’s early goal was enough to stun Germany 1-0 in Leipzig as the team move within touch of qualifying for the UEFA Nations League finals from Group A.

Szalai scored the winner as he met a corner with a spectacular backheeled flick that looped into the far corner.

The 34-year-old is set to retire after Monday’s final group game saying he had been “looking for the right time” in his pre-match news conference.

Hungary host Italy in their final group game, knowing a draw sees them through.

They had looked set to qualify for the finals for large periods of the night, but Italy’s win over England in Milan meant qualification will be decided between the two sides on Monday.

The result continues Hungary’s brilliant record in the Nations League. When the tournament was launched in 2018 they were in League C, but back-to-back promotions have seen them rise to League A and they are well set to qualify for the finals at the first time of asking.

Meanwhile, England suffered the embarrassment of relegation from their Uefa Nations League group after slumping to defeat against Italy in Milan.

Giacomo Raspadori’s stunning 68th-minute strike broke the deadlock in the San Siro as a game that lacked any spark finally came to life after the break, with England’s winless streak extended to five games, their worst since June 2014.

Raspadori produced instant control and a fierce right-foot finish which gave goalkeeper Nick Pope, in for the injured Jordan Pickford, no chance.

In the other group game, Bosnia and Herzegovina defeated Montenegro 1-0 on Friday in the UEFA Nations League.

The only goal of the encounter was scored by Ermedin Demirovic in the 45th minute.

Also, Finland played out a 1-1 draw against Romania in the same group.

Teemu Pukk gave the host the early lead before the visitor leveled parity in the 51st minute.

However, Georgia edge North Macedonia 2-0 while Bulgaria displayed class as they thrashed Gibraltar 5-1.

Finally, Estonia picked the maximum points as they overcome Malta 2-1.

Rauno Sappinen netted the opening goal in the 45th minute before Teddy Teuma equalised for the visitor in the 51st minute.

However, Henri Anier sealed the winner in the 86th minute with a fine finish.
