Man City ‘were offered’ Chelsea midfielder Saul in exchange for Bernardo by Atletico

Manchester City were offered Chelsea summer signing Saul Niguez by Atletico Madrid, according to reports.

The Spaniard secured a season-long loan move to the Blues on deadline day with the west London club having the option to make the deal permanent at the end of 2021/22.

Chelsea had been chasing a new midfielder all summer and finally got their man in the final hours of the window.

However, the Daily Star report that Man City were approached by Atletico with the proposition of swapping Saul for Bernardo Silva in a players-plus-cash transfer.

Bernardo was rumoured to be unhappy at City due to a lack of playing time but has stayed put for the season.

The Citizens were reportedly keen to involve the winger in a deal to bring Harry Kane to the Etihad, which also did not materialise.

Arsenal and Tottenham were interested but the player did not want a move to either north London outfit.

He was open to a move to Spain, however, but Pep Guardiola was not interested in losing the 27-year-old in exchange for Saul.

The midfielder was Chelsea’s second major signing of the summer, alongside Romelu Lukaku.

Lukaku joined from Inter Milan for £97.5million after scoring 64 goals in 95 matches for the Serie A club.

And he admits that Chelsea‘s interest this summer was a real head-turner.

“I was only going to leave Inter Milan for Chelsea,” Lukaku told HLN (via Sky Sports).

“Kids love Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United. And Chelsea for me, everyone knows what Chelsea means to me.

“If they ask me, why would I say no? I only realised that Chelsea was serious at the third offer. So it was €100m (£85m), then it was €105m (£90m), and then it went to €110m (£94m). Then I knew, this is truly serious.

“I was in a deep hole at Man United. I didn’t want to go behind Inter’s back.

“So after training I went to [Inter boss Simone] Inzaghi’s office. I didn’t want to ruin the atmosphere because I was no longer with my head in Milan. So I asked him: please find an agreement.”
