Man Utd agree six-month deal with Rangnick to become interim boss

Ralf Rangnick has reportedly reached an agreement with Manchester United to be their interim manager.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was dimissed following United’s 4-1 defeat to Watford last weekend, with Michael Carrick coming in as caretaker boss.

But United made it clear that they would be looking to hire an interim manager to hold the fort until the end of the season, and The Athletic report that they now have their man.

Rangnick is leaving his job as head of sports and development at Lokomotiv Moscow to take up the role.

The report claims the agreement is subject to Lokomotiv agreeing to release him from his contract, but United are understood to not anticipate that to be a problem.

Rangnick has agreed a six-month deal that will see United through the current campaign, before taking on a consultancy role for a further two years.

Rangnick has previously managed Hannover, Schalke, Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig and considered by many to be the ‘godfather’ of modern coaching in Germany.

Above his achievements as a coach, Rangnick has also been a hugely successful director of football, taking Leipzig from the fourth tier of German football to the Bundesliga.

Owen Hargeaves, for one, is a big fan of Rangnick, particularly as a director of football.

He said: “I don’t think you could get a better one. The recruitment, the detail, everything. He’s almost perfect for the job. He’s got experience, he’s been in big jobs.

“He was the architect behind that RB Leipzig project, getting to a Champions League semi-finals with players that wouldn’t get in any of the top teams.

“Going and getting Julian Nagelsmann to take them to the next level. His attention to detail is second to none. He’d be perfect for Manchester United.

“You think about Naby Keita, Mane, Joshua Kimmich, Haaland, all those players that come through him. A sporting director should get players that we don’t really know – that makes it really interesting – to sign players like Kylian Mbappe, that’s easy.

“But finding those hidden gems, those next ones – like Haaland – that’s what they should be doing. Ralf Rangnick does that time and time again.”
