Man Utd captain Maguire urged to leave due to ‘fan abuse’ as Tottenham are tipped as likely destination
Man Utd captain Harry Maguire has been told that he may be better off leaving the club as the “fans and media” have gone too far with their “abuse”.
Maguire finds himself in a difficult position at the moment. Erik ten Hag is not a big fan of his as the new Man Utd head coach has barely used him this season.
The Dutchman has instead preferred Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane this term.
If both players remain fit, it is hard to foresee Maguire finding his way back into the team.
This is even with him performing really well for England at the World Cup. He always turns up for his country and he was one of Gareth Southgate’s better players in Qatar.
Maguire should come home from the World Cup with more confidence and it may serve him well if he is given a chance by Ten Hag.
But there is an argument that Maguire is too far gone at United and a fresh start elsewhere may be for the best.
Ally McCoist thinks Maguire will exit Man Utd in the coming months and he has backed Tottenham Hotspur to bring him in.
Now ex-Spurs goalkeeper Brad Friedel has suggested that Maguire “should possibly look elsewhere”.
“It’s really difficult to say what Harry Maguire should do,” Friedel told Bookmakers.com.
“You’ve started for England, you’re at Manchester United. Do you need to leave a club like Man United? I think there’s a whole host of reasons why a player like Harry Maguire should possibly look elsewhere.
“You know, first and foremost, the fan abuse and media abuse that he’s got while at United, it’s gone way over the top of what a sportsman or woman should get, I think we can we can agree on that.
“Harry Maguire is a very good defender, we’ve just seen it in the World Cup playing against the best. So, you know, perhaps he does just need to either go if he’s not going to get into the team.
“If he does get in the team, the fans need to back him and the media needs to lay off him. If he plays poorly, you don’t have to go after him on a personal level.
“I don’t know Harry Maguire at all as a person, but he doesn’t strike me as a bad person and the players in England team like him.
“So I don’t understand why all of this negativity got so personal against him and because of that, I could understand why he might just want to go somewhere else and get a brand new beginning, and then continue being the very good defender that he is.”
