Man Utd ‘green light’ Erik ten Hag transfer ‘wish’ and club are ‘in driving seat’ to seal £45m deal

Erik ten Hag has reportedly been granted his transfer ‘wish’ as Man Utd have ‘sanctioned a move’ for PSV and Netherlands star Cody Gakpo.

The winger was linked with the Red Devils in the summer following his superb season for PSV in the Dutch Eredivisie.

Gakpo was never a priority signing at that point though as Man Utd were instead focused on recruiting Antony from Ajax.

The Dutchman was viewed as a cheaper alternative but United ended up spending around £85m to sign Antony.

The Brazil international has performed well in the first few months of this season but they may live to regret not signing Gakpo in the summer.

He was available for around £25m back then but his price has rocketed over the past couple of months.

This has come with him grabbing nine goals and 12 assists in just 14 league games. He also impressed at the World Cup as he scored three goals in five outings for the Netherlands.

Man Utd are in need of a new attacker following Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit last month.

His departure leaves the club with just Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford to choose from up front.

Gakpo is at his best on the wing but he has shown at club and international level that is capable of playing all across the forward line.

His form has fuelled talk that Man Utd could go back in for him in January.

This was disputed earlier this week though, with it reported that United are unwilling to spend big on a new forward during the winter transfer window.

Instead, they would revert to ‘plan b’ and this would see them try to sign Chelsea attacker Christian Pulisic on loan.

90min have different information though as they are reporting that ‘United have started working on a deal to sign Cody Gakpo from PSV in January’.

The club’s hierarchy have ‘green-lit’ the decision to move for Gakpo following ‘wishes from Ten Hag’.

It is noted that Ronaldo’s exit ‘has made room on the books for a replacement’ and Ten Hag has ‘encouraged’ the club to sign Gakpo.

PSV ‘have accepted’ that their star player could leave in January ‘as long as their valuation is met’.

The report adds: ‘They have made it known to the player’s representatives that they would require a club record £45m deal to part with the player.’

Man Utd legend Ruud van Nistelrooy is currently the manager of PSV. Earlier this month he admitted that Gakpo may exit the club in January.

“If I have the choice, I prefer [Gakpo to leave in] the summer, but it can also be now. You just know there comes a time when you can’t say no.”
