Man Utd star ‘rejects new deal’ as he is ‘determined’ to ‘play regularly’

Man Utd and England star Jesse Lingard has “rejected” a new contract offer as he is “determined” to play regular football, according to reports.

The 28-year-old had been a key player for Man Utd for five years up until 2020. But he fell down the pecking order after Bruno Fernandes joined the club.

Lingard did not feature once for United in the Premier League up until January during the 2020/21 campaign.

This led to him joining West Ham on loan during the last winter transfer window.

Lingard played regularly and he returned to form as he was involved in 13 goals from his 16 league outings for the Hammers.

Speaking last month, West Ham coach Stuart Pearce suggested that he would love Lingard back at the club:

“He’s a special lad, the players really like him and his ability shone.

“We’d like him to come and join us, that’s been an open secret. At the moment it looks like he’s vying for a place in the Man Utd team.”

Despite this, a return to West Ham did not come to fruition this summer as he remains a Man Utd player.

Lingard has not started for the Red Devils so far this season but he has made one substitute appearance.

ESPN have reported that the Englishman has turned down a contract extension. His current deal is set to expire in 2022.

The report adds that he has turned down this offer as he is “keen to ensure he will get the opportunity to play regularly” first.

They also state that Lingard is “determined to find regular football” to boost his chances of playing for England at the 2022 World Cup.

Lingard’s status at Manchester United has not been helped by the club re-signing Cristiano Ronaldo.

Romelu Lukaku has also returned to the Premier League. The Chelsea star has insisted that he should not be compared to Ronaldo:

“Don’t ever compare me to Cristiano Ronaldo, never.

“Cristiano Ronaldo is, for me, in the top three best players in the history of football. I’m not going to rank him from first to third but he’s in there.

“What he has achieved in football today for players of my generation is something exceptional.”

“I was lucky enough to play against him in Italy and now that he’s back in the Premier League, it’s all good for English football.

“As for the rest, comparing statistics and all that, it’s useless.”
