Mikel Arteta faces breaking ‘promise’ as Arsenal boss creates own selection headache

Mikel Arteta is said to have given Bernd Leno assurances that he will be back between the sticks for Arsenal after a two-game break.

Aaron Ramsdale – signed from Sheffield United for £25million this summer – was handed his first Premier League start against Norwich, keeping a clean sheet as the Gunners picked up their first win of the season.

“I think he [Ramsdale] was terrific,” Arteta said after the game. “It is not only what he did on the technical side, it is what he transmits, his energy, his chemistry with the backline, how he reacts, his body language… I think it was top.

“We have two fantastic goalkeepers and never forget what Bernd has done for us and what a good goalkeeper he is. I had to make decisions and I felt Aaron was the right one to do so and like in any other position, and that is what we decided today.”

Asked whether he will he be rotating his keepers? “I want to see how they perform,” Arteta replied.

“Now we need performances and we need to win football matches, so whoever gives better performances and whoever transmits more confidence and is more reliable will play.”

Leno started the first three league games of the season, conceding nine goals in the process.

And Bild journalist Christian Falk claims Arteta ‘promised’ Leno he would be given a break of two games, before returning to the starting lineup.

Arsenal face Burnley this weekend ahead of Spurs in the London derby on September 26.

And according to Falk, Arteta had planned to reinstate Leno for the clash with Tottenham.

But another good performance from Ramsdale at Turf Moor will surely mean the Spaniard will have to break his promise.

As Falk says: “We will see if Arteta keeps his word.”
