Potter admits Chelsea ‘weren’t good enough’ vs Nottm Forest as their performance was ‘concerning’

Graham Potter has admitted that Chelsea “weren’t good enough” against Nottm Forest as his side’s performance in the 1-1 draw was “concerning”.

Chelsea’s first league game after the World Cup break was against AFC Bournemouth and they won 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Their game at Nottm Forest on New Year’s Day was expected to be tougher as Steve Cooper’s side were unbeaten in five at home across all competitions.

Forest were arguably the better side against Chelsea over the 90 minutes but they fell behind against the run of play after 16 minutes.

It was a strange goal as Willy Boly’s attempted clearance looped over Dean Henderson and bounced off the crossbar. The ball fell kindly for Raheem Sterling and the Englishman smashed the ball home from close range to make it 1-0.

The hosts improved after the break and Morgan Gibbs-White struck the bar with a great strike before Serge Aurier equalised a few minutes later.

Neither side were able to find a winner so this result leaves Chelsea eighth in the Premier League. They are seven points adrift of fourth-placed Man Utd.

Speaking post-match, Potter suggested that it would have been “unfair” had Chelsea picked up all three points.

“Hard earned point, against a team that are set up well they put us under pressure second half. Our performance level wasn’t good enough to take the three points,” Potter told Sky Sports.

“We didn’t move the ball fast enough, not enough movement. But it would’ve been unfair to take the three points.

“When the game became a bit more out of control we suffered with the duels and struggled to deal with that aspect.

“It’s a tough game, Forest played a good game but we’re disappointed with our performance over the 90 minutes and concerned we didn’t deserve the win.

“Forest did well. It suited better them better than us and we have to improve that. They attack spaces so well, all of a sudden a mistake and they have some real pace with the false nine dropping in it can cause you problems. It’s never comfortable but we can do better.”

On transfer window: “Until someone has told me they have been signed it would be unfair of me to comment. I’ve been focused on the team today.”

On top four hopes: “For us, it’s about the next game and trying to improve, we have a long way to go so it would be a mistake to think about what could happen in five months’ time.

“We need to be more consistent. It would help to get players back, the key ones and then you can build consistency in key places.”
