Reims vs Rennes Picks and Predictions

Over the last couple of years, Rennes has become one of the most exciting teams in France, and they will be favorites against Reims in this first match after the World Cup break.

Under 2.5 Goals

Even though Rennes can score goals, they have one of the best attacks in France, Reims is the team that needs to be respected on their home turf. They are one of the best ‘under’ teams in the league, especially when they are playing in front of their fans.

Rennes to Win

Reims has been defeated only twice at home, and the last one came courtesy of Monaco. Rennes is one of the most consistent away teams in the league losing only once. However, they do have four draw games, so if they want to play in the Champions League next season, they need to step up their efforts when playing away.

Reims needs to stop their opponent’s transitionReims

They are not one of the most attractive teams to watch in France, but Reims have their qualities. They hit the jackpot when they brought in Folarin Balogun. Unfortunately for them he is just a loanee from Arsenal and will be returning to London soon enough. Balogun scored half of their goals this season, and many justifiably wonder what would have happened if he wasn’t in the team. They would probably be somewhere in the relegation zone. Reims only has three wins in 15 matches this season, but they are undefeated in their last seven games. Their most impressive result was a goalless draw against PSG. They will need to recapture that form when Rennes arrives in town, similarly to PSG, the visitors will look to put pressure on Reims’ defense as soon as the referee’s whistle gives a signal to start the match. Andrew Gravillon is the only player missing through injury.

Reims’ possible starting 11: Diouf, Diakite, Agbadou, Abdelhamid, De Smet, Matusiwa, Cajuste, Ito, Doumbia, Zeneli, Holm.

Rennes

One of the most impressive qualities of Rennes is their coach’s ability to balance the squad with so many games they played in three months. Because of the World Cup, the schedule was cluttered more than usual, and they had to play a couple of matches per week as they were also competing, successfully, in the Europa League. They showed in three friendly games they played that their form didn’t lose a bit. They won all three games with plenty of goals being scored. Martin Terrier and Amine Gouiri lead the scoring charts for the team, but one of their most important players, Lovro Majer will not be in the squad as he is on a break after the World Cup. But, the balance that we mentioned is the key for Rennes, and the way they will approach the remainder of the season.

Rennes’ possible starting 11: Alemdar, Truffert, Theate, Omari, Traore, Gouiri, Xeka, Tait, Terrier, Kalimuendo, Bourigeaud.

Starting lineups

Starting lineups are usually released 60 minutes before kick-off.

Player to Watch: Folarin Balogun

Although Rennes are the ones who have more star power, the young English forward is the talk of the league. No one expected him to be this good, and play for a team that was expected to fight to avoid relegation. Balogun is dominating in the center-forward position, and with eight goals to his credit this season, he will look to add more against Rennes.
