Rohr Gives Reasons Why Calvin Bassey Wasn’t Handed Super Eagles Debut Against CAR
Coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Gernot Rohr has defended his decision not to hand Calvin Bassey Ughelumba his debut with the senior national team of Nigeria.
Bassey was an unused substitute in the games against Central Africa Republic (CAR) which ended in a 0-1 loss and a 2-0 win respectively for the senior national team of Nigeria as they maintain top spot in their group in the qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup.
Rohr who revealed prior to the game that he hope to cap tie the left back who is eligible for Italy and also England explained that the outcome of both games made it impossible to hand the 22 year old his international bow.
The former Leicester City trainee has however commited his international future to Nigeria and was over the moon over his first call up and according to Rohr he will be given the chance to make his debut soon.
” In the first game, we were chasing the game so we needed a forward and in the second game, Balogun got injured and we have to make a substitute which wasn’t planned. So in the end we couldn’t bring in Bassey but we hope he gets to play in subsequent games with the team”, Rohr said.
