Saul reveals he has left his ‘comfort zone’ after fearing Chelsea collapse

Saul Niguez has revealed that his loan move from Atletico Madrid to Chelsea made him step out of his “comfort zone”.

The Spain international joined the Atletico academy side in 2008 before making his first senior appearance for the first team at the age of 17, playing six minutes in a Europa League clash with Besiktas.

However, after 13 years with the Colchoneros, Saul left Madrid for Chelsea this summer on a season-long loan deal to the Premier League.

Seven footballers who battled back against the crowd

Saul will have to get past Mateo Kovacic, Jorginho and N’Golo Kante if he wants a starting berth in Thomas Tuchel’s side this campaign.

Speaking to Spanish internet celebrity Ibai Llanos, Saul said: “The three midfielders who are playing are at a high level. It will not be easy to play, but if I put my mind to it and fight it, I can get it.

“Chelsea has promised me to train in my position [midfield], but to play we will see. To return to certain roles that I do not play in now – that is the most important reason for my decision.

“This transfer is a step out of my comfort zone for me. I believe that you will see a new Saul in a new [better] place.”

On the deal being touch and go on deadline day, Saul added: “I thought ‘this is not going to come in and that’s it’. It has been a long afternoon and night.

“My wife was very nervous. We have had some very complicated days because this decision is not easy. Leaving my home on a new adventure is complicated.”

Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso has backed Saul to settle in quickly at Stamford Bridge following his late move.

Saul’s compatriot said: “I know Saul from the national team, and also we shared a manager from when we were in the Real Madrid academy.

“He’s a great player. His conditions are going to be good for the Premier League. He is strong physically, he is very good in the air, and those are things you need when you move to this league.

“He is ready to kick off and hopefully we can take advantage of his qualities and he will be of great help to the team, because it’s going to be a long year, with a lot of competitions.”
