Tottenham identify Rodgers as ‘top target’ for Mourinho’s replacement

Tottenham Hotspur are on the lookout for a new manager after the departure of Jose Mourinho and they identified Leicester City manager, Brendan Rodgers as their ‘top target’.

Spurs parted ways with Jose Mourinho last week, with former player Ryan Mason taking the reins until the end of the season.

The London club missed out on their first trophy since 2008 when they fell to a 1-0 defeat against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday.

Rodgers has previously been linked with the Tottenham job, but the Sun are now reporting that chairman Daniel Levy has identified the Northern Irishman as his ‘top target’ in the summer.

The City boss has led the Foxes to their first FA Cup final in over 50 years and will be aiming to become the first Leicester manager to lift the trophy when City takes on Chelsea in the final on May 15.

It therefore could take a lot to persuade the manager to swap the King Power Stadium for the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium at the end of the season, especially with Spurs as outsiders for a top four finish.

Speaking about the possibility of Rodgers leaving City, Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson is not convinced that Spurs will be able to turn his head.

“I think, if other clubs want to tempt him away, it will not be easy and as simple as suggesting that historically we happen to be a bit of a bigger club than the one you are at,” he said.

“It will be a question of having to persuade him that the future will be much better for him if he moves and that will not necessarily be an easy thing to do as what he is doing at Leicester, the players he has at Leicester, the support he has at Leicester, the way the future looks for Leicester, all of these things are very positive aspects.”
